Scientists inch closer to extending human life span
Researchers have identified genes that perform a key role in the ageing process, boosting efforts of scientists aiming to possibly extend the natural human life span.
The study appearing in the journal ‘Genome Research’ looked for genes that control the ageing process in two primitive organisms, yeast cells and nematode worms — separated by 1.5 billion years of evolution.
By mapping how different genes play their role in the ageing process, researchers hope to identify ways to treat old age diseases and possibly slow down the process itself.

Spectrum War Round II: GSM, CDMA providers fight over eGSM band
NEW DELHI: A new round of spectrum battle has broken out between existing GSM operators and CDMA players who are launching GSM services after the government recently approved mobile services on dual technology. This time around, they are battling for the rights to use the ‘eGSM band’.
The ‘eGSM band’ involves radio frequencies of 880-890 MHz paired with 925-935 MHz. The GSM operators’ body, Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), has said that globally this band is used by service providers to offer GSM-based mobile services and all the GSM equipment manufactured worldwide is attuned to operating in this band. In India, however, this band was earmarked for CDMA-based mobile services though it was never allotted to CDMA operators.
Without naming Reliance Communications, the COAI has said that “a large CDMA operator who is desirous of offering GSM-based mobile services, and who, in fact, has also been allocated GSM spectrum in the 1800 MHz band, has represented to the DoT that he be allowed to ‘swap’ his 1800 MHz allocation and instead be allocated GSM spectrum in the eGSM band”. At present, all GSM players offer telecom services in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands.

Eking extra juice from iPod, laptop batteries, maybe
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Someday, the batteries that power your iPod or laptop will last for weeks. Until then, your options for keeping the juice flowing range from hacking them to whacking them.
Eventually, users of MP3 players, mobile phones or personal computers all face an ominous flashing light or dull “beep” — the device’s warning that it has sucked all but the last spark from its portable power source. Brace yourself, this “low battery” alert says, the end is near.
At the heart of the $55 billion (27.1 billion pound) global battery market is the chemical conundrum of power supply. Engineers have shrunk and souped up gadgets so that it’s possible to watch whole movies on paperback book-sized devices, but portable power technology has not kept up.

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates urged U.S. communications regulators on Thursday to free up more vacant television airwaves to be used for wireless services such as broadband Internet access.
During an appearance before a Northern Virginia technology group, Gates said the so-called “white space” spectrum between analog broadcast channels could be used to expand access of wireless broadband service using Wi-Fi technology.
“We’re hopeful that that will be made available so that Wi-Fi can explode in terms of its usage, even out into some of these less dense areas (of the United States) where distance has been a big problem for Wi-Fi,” Gates said in response to a question from the audience.

New Nokia Phones Debut at CeBit 08
At the ongoing CeBit 2008 in Hanover in Germany, Nokia has introduced the Nokia 6650 and the Nokia 6124 Classic; a case of old wine in a new bottle (old model numbers with ‘Classic’ thrown in) or simply superstition on the part of the Finnish phone maker.
Ironically, a Nokia 6650 was launched at the CeBit 2003; one of the first 3G phones on the market. Nevertheless, the “new” Nokia 6650 (teamed-up with carrier T-Mobile) is a clamshell with wireless connectivity and multimedia features.

Microsoft targets the mobile web
The software firm has signed a deal with handset manufacturer Nokia to bring its Silverlight platform to millions of mobile phones.
Silverlight is seen as a competitor to Adobe’s Flash, which is already used by popular websites such as YouTube.
The software will first be available on Nokia’s high end smart phones running a Symbian operating system.
